Collision Course †NEOs Essay Example for Free

Collision Course – NEOs Essay When looking at the Earth in the Solar System, there are many fascinating objects, and also many dangerous ones. NEOs, or Near Earth Objects are constantly being studied to determine the actual possibility of collision with the Earth. Most NEOs consist of meteors, meteorites, comets and asteroids. Though most of the objects are too small to cause any sort of substantial damage, there are a few that are capable of causing the next major extinction. In order for an object to be considered a NEO, it must be within 1. 3 AUs (or astronomical units) from the Sun. 1.3 AU is the same as about 93 million miles. The NEOs are objects that have been bumped by the gravity of other planets which let them get close to the Earths orbit.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   One of the major groups of NEOs are meteoroids. The term meteor is actually used to describe the streak of visible light after its trip through the Earths orbit. One of the most famous craters, which   is like a giant scar caused by a NEO hitting the Earth, is in Arizona. Meteor Crater, or Barringer Meteorite Crater as it is also known as, is a jarring reminder of what kind of damage a NEO can do upon impact. Most meteors are small enough that once they are pulled in by the Earths orbit and hit the atmosphere, they burn up and disintegrate before they ever get the chance to actually hit the Earths surface.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another group of NEOs are asteroids. One of the largest asteroids that astronomers keep their eyes on is Apophis. This giant is due to hit the Earth in 2036. The size of Apophis is estimated to be a bit larger then the Rose Bowl, and if it were to hit the Earth would cause global damage. If it hits the ocean, the damage occurring from the huge tsunamis by themselves would be catastrophic.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another class of objects that are visible to the naked eye are comets. When speaking of them as NEOs, then they are considered to be old comet nuclei whose perihelia are less then 1.3 AU from the Sun. One comet in particular that has been known through history is Halleys Comet. Also, the trail of cosmic dust, or tail of the comet can also be passed through by the Earth.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In conclusion, NASA is taking steps to try and diminish the risk of being hit by a NEO by continually watching and cataloging the orbits and behaviors of NEOs. What remedies that have been looked at so far to try and deal with the risk of being hit is to explode nuclear weapons near the object to try and change its course. Other considerations that have been looked at is sending high-speed ballistic missiles towards the object to make an impact, or to send a hovering spacecraft to pull the object into a different orbit, thereby allowing it to miss the Earth altogether. The future for watching NEOs is strongly backed now more then ever before. Washington has allowed a $4 million dollar budget for listing potential and real threats to the Earth, and sent a new report to congress in March 2007. Considering the probability that the Earth will be hit again, as it has been hit in the past requires that the scientific community take heed of the risk, and not only be able to prepare the world for such a catastrophe, but be able to prevent it as well. Kuwait :: essays research papers

"After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited." -18th Amendment, Section 1, 1919 Those words initiated the rise of organized crime in America. With the closing of saloons and pubs, speakeasies sprung up like wildflowers around the country. Bootlegging and rum running became underground businesses, while the rise of mob bosses thrived. Mostly associated with the Italian nationality, criminal gangs were alive in the inner city. These gangs were mostly dominated by the Irish. It was not until the 18th amendment, that the Irish became the ashes, and the Italians rose from the flames. While today the Mob, and the Mafia are the common terms associated with organized crime, other terms are also applied. Those being the Outfit, the Syndicate, and La Cosa Nostra. La Cosa Nostra was a phrase coined by Charles "Lucky" Luciano and Meyer Lansky, meaning "this thing of ours". Chicago is perhaps infamous for its role in organized crime, earning a nickname from some as the bootlegging capital of the United States. Chicago was home to notorious gangsters like John Torrio and Al "Scarface" Capone. The geography of the city helped promote and import alcohol from Canada, thus aiding the Mafia in their growth. The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre made the tension against Capone’s South side, to George "Bugs" Moran’s North side known to the world, ultimately decimating Moran’s men. As Capone made his presence known in Florida, seven of Moran’s men were slaughtered inside a warehouse. Frank Gusenburg, one of the seven victims, lived long enough to inform the police that "Nobody shot me". "By banding together and aiding each other in case of trouble, by obtaining lawyers and advancing funds, the criminal element has strengthened its position, not only in this city, but in almost every large city in the country. The ring leaders in the movement are old offenders and from their former experiences have a wider knowledge of the law than many policemen." -Philadelphia Associated Press, 1923 Although Chicago was the only city the thrived in organized crime. New York, Kansas City, Philadelphia, and Detroit were among those who had individuals involved in the Mafia. Detroit, being close to the Canadian border, was a major area for bootlegging. The liquor imported to Detroit was then exported to Capone in Chicago.

Latitude or Longitude Which is Which

Lines of longitude and latitude are part of the grid system that helps us navigate the Earth, but it can be difficult to remember which is which. There is an easy memory trick that anyone can use to keep the two geography terms straight. Just Remember the Ladder   Next time you are trying to remember the difference between degrees of latitude  and longitude, just think of a ladder. The latitude lines are the rungs and the longitude lines are the long lines that hold those rungs together. Latitude  lines run east and west. Just like rungs on a ladder, they remain parallel as they run across the earths surface. In this way, you can easily remember that latitude is just like ladder-tude. In the same manner, you can remember that lines of  longitude run north to south because they are long. If you are looking up a ladder, the vertical lines appear to meet at the top. The same can be said for longitude lines, which converge as they stretch from the North Pole to the South Pole. How to Remember Latitude and Longitude in Coordinates Coordinates  are often expressed as two sets of numbers. The first number is always the latitude and the second is the longitude. It easy to remember which is which if you think of the two coordinates in alphabetical terms: latitude comes before longitude in the dictionary. For example, the Empire State Building lies at  40.748440 °, -73.984559 °. This means that it is approximately 40 ° north of the equator and 74 ° west of the prime meridian. When reading coordinates, you will also come across negative and positive numbers. The equator is 0 ° latitude. Points north of the equator are expressed with positive numbers and points to the south are expressed as negative numbers. There are 90 degrees  in either direction. The prime meridian is 0 ° longitude. Points to the east are expressed as positive numbers and points to the west are expressed as negative numbers. There are 180 degrees  in either direction. If positive and negative numbers are not used, the coordinates may include the letter for the direction instead. That same location for the Empire State Building may be formatted like this:  N40 ° 44.9064, W073 ° 59.0735. But wait, where did that extra set of numbers come from? This last example of  coordinates is commonly used when reading a  GPS  and the second numbers (44.9061 and 59.0735) indicate the minutes, which helps us pinpoint the exact latitude and longitude of a location. How Does Time Factor Into Latitude and Longitude? Lets take a look at latitude because it is the easier of the two examples.   For each minute that you travel north of the equator, you will travel 1/60th of a degree  or about 1 mile. That is because there are approximately 69 miles between degrees of latitude  (rounded down to 60 to make the examples easier). In order to get from  40.748440 degrees to an exact minute north of the equator, we need to express those minutes. That is where that second number comes into play.   N40 ° 44.9064 can be translated as  40 degrees and 44.9064 minutes north of the equator 3 Common Formats of Coordinates We have reviewed two formats that coordinates can be given in, but there are actually three. Lets review all of them using the Empire State Building example. Degrees Alone (DDD.DDDDDD °):  40.748440 ° (positive number, so this indicates  degrees north or east)Degrees and Minutes (DDD ° MM.MMMM):  N40 ° 44.9064 (direction with degrees and minutes)Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds  (DDD ° MM.MMMM  SS.S):  N40 ° 44 54.384 (direction with degrees, minutes, and seconds)
